Background of the Study
Twitter trends have increasingly become a dynamic force in shaping linguistic behavior, notably affecting the morphosyntactic features of Nigerian English. As users engage with trending topics, the brevity and immediacy of tweets encourage innovative language use, resulting in morphosyntactic variations that diverge from traditional patterns. The study investigates how these trends foster phenomena such as altered word order, novel affixation, and syntactic reordering, which are disseminated rapidly across digital networks (Okafor, 2023). The comparative element of this study contrasts these trends across different user groups and contexts, providing insights into the convergence of digital communication and language evolution. Digital platforms like Twitter not only reflect cultural shifts but also actively contribute to the reconfiguration of morphosyntactic norms by offering a space where informal, spontaneous linguistic innovations can thrive (Chukwu, 2024). The research underscores the interplay between global digital influences and local linguistic traditions, highlighting that morphosyntactic adaptations are not merely by-products of online communication but are instrumental in the evolution of language practices in Nigeria. The study draws on theories of language change and digital semiotics to analyze how trending topics trigger structural transformations and how these modifications resonate with users’ identity and cultural expression (Adeniyi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the observable influence of Twitter trends on language use, there is insufficient empirical research on how these trends specifically impact Nigerian morphosyntactic features. Preliminary analyses indicate significant syntactic and morphological shifts driven by digital interactions; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. The rapid pace of digital communication challenges traditional linguistic frameworks, leaving a gap in understanding how morphosyntactic innovations emerge and stabilize within online communities. This study aims to address these issues by comparing morphosyntactic adaptations across various Twitter trends, thereby providing a structured analysis of the language change process in a digital context. The absence of such focused research hampers the development of theoretical models that integrate digital influences into broader linguistic paradigms, necessitating this investigation (Eze, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To analyze the morphosyntactic changes emerging from Twitter trends in Nigerian English.

  2. To compare these changes across different demographic and contextual user groups.

  3. To develop a theoretical model linking digital trends to morphosyntactic evolution.

Research Questions:

  1. What morphosyntactic features are most affected by Twitter trends in Nigerian English?

  2. How do these changes vary across different user communities?

  3. What theoretical framework best explains the relationship between digital trends and morphosyntactic innovation?

Significance of the Study
This study contributes to our understanding of digital linguistics by elucidating how Twitter trends affect morphosyntactic features in Nigerian English. Its findings have implications for sociolinguistic theory and language policy, particularly in integrating digital communication into existing linguistic models. The insights gained will benefit educators, language planners, and digital media analysts by providing a comprehensive framework to study language evolution in digital contexts (Okafor, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Twitter Trends: Popular topics or hashtags that dominate conversations on Twitter.

  2. Morphosyntactic Features: The combined aspects of word formation and sentence structure in a language.

  3. Comparative Study: An approach that examines similarities and differences across distinct groups or contexts.
